… And moved back to InfoSupport again

After two years and three months I’m happy to announce that I’m back at InfoSupport again.

In those two years I did some interesting work at Getronics on their Getronics Delivery Process (a RUP based Software Factory), worked on several project for the Dutch Taxservice, participated in several CMMI appraisals and was given the opportunity to take a close look at Getronics Indian development partner Mindtree. My one week visit to their office at Bangalore was a real eye-opener for me and was the beginning of several close personal relationships.

When I left InfoSupport some two years ago, the option to return was explicitly kept open and I’m glad to be back as a member of the Infosupport Professional Development Center.

My first two weeks are interesting from the start. I participated as a scribe in a SCAMPI-C CMMI level 3 Assesment supporting the Lead Appraiser Simon Porro from SPI Partners. Next job is working together with Ivar Jacobson International on process improvement using EssUp.

I wil pick up blogging and jumping to conclusions right now at http://blogs.infosupport.com/harryn/default.aspx

Hope to see you all back there.

Along the riverdike

Since yesterday, we’re having a piece of art called “Along the riverdike” hanging above our couch.

It’s from Frank Dekkers, an artist born our town Nijmegen (Netherlands) whose woodcuts were awarded at the Netherlands Graphic Arts Prize in 1998.

We really like the composition and the technique he uses (and it really looks nice above our coach).

MomPC – Creating a parent safe PC

Roy is the primary technician and support personnel for his parents – and I know lots of my readers are the primary support personnel for a whole bunch of relatives, neighbours, collegues and others.

Not a high tech story, but nice to find out you’re not the only one.

Bad capacitors reason for not blogging

Bad capacitorsLast months I experienced lots of unexplainable problems with my computer.

Programs crashed, data got lost, the computer went slower and slower and at the end also frequent BSOD’s (Blue Screen Of Death) and reboots.

With three upgrowing daughters being very active on MSN and Hives, I spent lots of evenings trying to solve the problem.

I installed, deinstalled and reinstalled all suspicious programs, updated drivers, installed extra virus scanners, tested and changed memory, you name it.

All this problem solving took all of my free time and prevented me from blogging for a while.

At last, the problem was pinpointed as a bad capacitors problem with my Dell GX270.

This is the only Dell model having thes faulty capacitors, and consequently having this problem. The capacitors get overheated and leak this orange fluid from the top. Knowing this really helps googling and finding out thousands of people are having the same problem.

As the computer was still under support, and the problem was obvious, the solution was simple. Within 15 minutes, a service technision from Dell (actually Dell hired a collegue of mine from Getronics) replaced the motherboard. He said he had eight more of these motherboards to go that day.

As the bad motherboard resulted in some bad files and other problems on disk, I installed a new disk and reinstalled all my programs.

Now I’m back, up and running, so lets continue blogging!

Update on Adobe Reader speedup

I wrote before on being tired of waiting for Adobe Acrobat Reader to load.

Recently I got so tired of downloading updates for Acrobat (and having to reboot everytime …) that I decided to deinstall Acrobat Reader and changed to Foxit Reader.

It works a lot faster than Acrobat, although some “exotic” features might not work right now.

The only drawback I found out is that I have to get used to the new icon, I really got used to Acrobat’s one!
